Happy Valentine’s Day! Whether today is a day for you and your valentine(s), galetine(s) or self-tines (I made that up), I hope you are having a wonderful day! How funny is it that we celebrate this day of love in the United States while in other parts of the world there are such things as Single’s Days? Either way, it’s a day of pampering—for yourself (hello single ladies and ‘gents) or for your significant other. It’s a day of celebrating love in all forms.
I first learned of what love is in the form of my parents. Being together through some of the toughest times that no person should have to endure, they were always each other’s rock. No obstacle was too large for them to conquer and no failure was enough to break them down. Their relationship was and still is built on the foundation of giving more than taking, over-caring and always seeing the good within the rubbish of life. They have shown me time and time again that love is the purest form of caring for another, sometimes running so deep we fail to distinguish one from another.
So I grew up with the notion that loving someone means caring on a deeper level. I can wholeheartedly say that I love my family and friends because I care for them in a way I want to continue to give anything I can. Building up that love requires some foundation such as mutual understandings, mutual guidance and mutual selfishness. While I may be naive to still think that those who radiate love towards the people around them do so because they genuinely care, I don’t want to think of the alternative. In my mind, when someone says they love another, there shouldn’t be any motives of selfishness.
The whole point of this post comes down to me hoping to instill some motivation behind an act of care stemming from your love for someone. Spreading love on Valentine’s Day isn’t reserved for your significant other only. Spread it to your family members who are always cheering for you, your friends who you have chosen to be your alternative family, yourself for still making lemonade out of those lemons life keeps hurling you or anyone you see throughout the day for that matter. Today, I challenge you to love more and to have fun while doing it!
